Based in Redditch, UK, Des Hammond is the founder of The Cigar Cabin and a proud Toro Puro Ambassador. When he’s not running his recruitment agency or helping people back into work, he’s in his garden lounge, enjoying the ritual of a good cigar.
His journey began back in 2009 on a trip to Ibiza, when he boldly claimed to be a cigar smoker. One badly inhaled cigar later, he realised he had some learning to do and from that moment, he dove into the world of cigars with full commitment.
Des’ Ritual
Des’ evenings are often spent in The Cigar Cabin, the space he built over ten years ago, sharing many unforgettable moments there with his beloved British Bulldog, Reggie.
‘So for me, cigar ritual is deciding on what cigar to enjoy, how I’m going to cut it, what method of lighting and what to pair it with and often, who with!’
Des’ ideal session?
A classic film, a punch cut, a match light, and a single shot of whisky to finish.
Des’ playlist is a mix of meaning and mood. From the reflective depth of Linkin Park to the timeless voice of Frank Sinatra, each track echoes a moment in his ritual.
It’s music that fits the calm of The Cigar Cabin an honest, personal, and full of feeling.

A Memorable Moment
‘I went to a cigar event at JJ Fox for the Arturo Fuente 1912 release. At the end, I knocked Carlito Fuente’s book off a stand and caused a panic. I just wanted to disappear, but Carlito said, “Will add more value now,” which made me feel better..!’
Advice for New Smokers
‘I would always say take your time with something mild to start and enjoy every moment..!’
On Being a Toro Puro Ambassador
‘It’s an honour. I get lots of brand messages, but after speaking to Lisardo and seeing the attention to detail in the cigars and packaging — I knew this was a different way of thinking.’
Looking Ahead
‘It seems to be changing all the time, never anything positive. People in power don’t see the value of the cigar community — they compare it to vapes and cigarettes, when it’s completely worlds apart. But on the positive, I see a lot of younger cigar aficionados coming on the scene, which is encouraging..!’
Beyond the Cabin
Des also runs his own YouTube channel — The Cigar Cabin — where he shares reviews of cigars from both new and established brands. From visiting cigar shops to attending events, it’s become a space to connect, discover, and celebrate the wider cigar world.
‘Helping new cigar manufacturers and established doing reviews on their current cigars is something I love doing..! And with that, I’ve met some fantastic people..!’
