James Drew, owner of Cigar Shack UK & Cigar Shack Media, is based in Port Talbot, Wales.
He first stepped into the cigar world six years ago when he came across a TikToker called The Bearded Cigars, who was on a mission to set up his own cigar brand. James offered to help with graphic design and cigar bands.
To understand the product, he decided to try one himself. The first was a well-known brand he didn’t enjoy, but that soon changed when The Bearded Cigars recommended a Davidoff Winston Churchill Belicoso. That cigar changed everything.
Today, he is proud to be a Toro Puro Ambassador, helping to share the ritual and the culture with a wider audience.
For James, cigars are more than smoke and ash:
‘It’s everything that cigar stands for, it’s everything that cigar was made for. Without the ritual of the cutting, lighting and smoking process, you might as well smoke a cigarette.’
James’ Ritual
A typical cigar session for James includes music, a quality pour and the right setting.
His favourite pairing?
‘This is really controversial and some people love me or hate me for it. It’s not rum, it’s not whiskey it’s… Tropical Monster Energy. Everything about it pairs perfectly with a cigar and creates a real sweet and savoury experience. Don’t knock it until you try it.’
And always, music to set the tone:

One Memorable Moment
‘Stood at the top of a mountain with Tinsey Beer and Joya De Nicaragua, overlooking most of the active volcanos in Nicaragua. Beer in one hand, cigar in another. I couldn’t believe a love of cigars got me to that point and one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen. Something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.’
Advice for New Smokers
‘Take your time, and make your own decisions. Some people told me to stay clear of certain brands and they are now some of my most favourite cigars. Try everything. Don’t just stick to one brand.’
What Does It Mean To Be Part Of Toro Puro
‘It means the world to me. I don’t work with every person that throws free cigars at me. I work with people and join communities that I truly believe in and people that are doing something different from the norm.’
Looking Ahead
‘I’ll be honest, I think there’s going to be a struggle. With rising costs and governments trying to take away our freedom of smoking cigars, I think it’s going to be harder than ever. But don’t you worry. Unlike most communities or industries, we all have your back and we will go down fighting if we have to.’
